Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Practical answers about community engagement manuscripts, submission requirements, peer review, publication ethics, fees, and author services.

Welcome to the JPPMI FAQ

This page provides guidance for authors preparing and submitting manuscripts to Jurnal Pengabdian dan Pengembangan Masyarakat Indonesia (JPPMI).

These answers summarize common requirements and editorial procedures. Authors should consult the relevant official journal policies for complete and current instructions. In case of inconsistency, the applicable published policy and written editorial instructions take precedence.

01 | Journal Scope and Manuscript Eligibility

1. What types of manuscripts does JPPMI accept?

JPPMI primarily accepts original Community Engagement Articles reporting completed community service, empowerment, education, mentoring, technology transfer, or community development programs. The manuscript must describe an identifiable community need, a substantive activity or intervention, and relevant evaluation findings. The different subject areas within the journal's scope do not constitute separate manuscript types.

2. Can I submit an ordinary research article without community engagement activities?

Generally, no. Conventional laboratory, observational, or survey research without a substantive community engagement component is outside the journal's primary scope. Research methods may be incorporated into a community engagement article when they appropriately support program planning, implementation, or evaluation.

3. Is a one-day training, counseling, or workshop eligible for publication?

It may be eligible if it addresses a clearly identified community need and provides sufficient information about participants, implementation, evaluation, findings, and limitations. Duration alone does not determine publication suitability. A report containing only event schedules, participant photographs, or general claims of success is normally insufficient.

4. Must a community engagement program demonstrate long-term impact?

Not necessarily. Short-term outputs, immediate knowledge changes, feasibility, acceptability, and other relevant evaluation findings may constitute a useful scholarly contribution. Authors must distinguish these outcomes from long-term behavioral, health, economic, or community-level impacts that have not been measured.

02 | Manuscript Preparation and Submission

5. Can I write the manuscript in Indonesian or English?

Yes. JPPMI accepts manuscripts written in formal Indonesian or English. Both Indonesian and English titles, abstracts, and keywords are required regardless of the manuscript's primary language.

6. What are the manuscript length, abstract, and keyword requirements?

The recommended manuscript length is approximately 4,000–7,000 words, excluding references. Each Indonesian and English abstract must not exceed 300 words. Provide 3–5 keywords in each language. Authors should follow the current official template and applicable editorial instructions.

7. Must I use the official JPPMI article template?

Yes. Manuscripts must be prepared using the official JPPMI template, maintaining its required structure and formatting. The prescribed sections include Title, Abstracts, Keywords, Key Message, Introduction, Methods, integrated Results and Discussion, Conclusion, applicable Declarations, and References.

8. What files must be uploaded for double-anonymous peer review?

Prepare a separate title page containing author information and an anonymized manuscript without author names, affiliations, identifying acknowledgments, or unnecessary identifying document metadata. Additional evidence or supplementary materials may be requested where relevant.

9. What reference style does JPPMI use?

JPPMI uses APA 7th edition. The journal recommends at least 20 relevant references, predominantly primary scholarly sources, with an emphasis on literature published during the most recent ten years. All cited references must be accurate, traceable, and relevant. Every in-text citation should correspond to a reference-list entry.

03 | Ethics, Community Consent, and Evaluation Evidence

10. Is ethics committee approval mandatory for every community service activity?

No. Routine minimal-risk community engagement does not automatically require formal research ethics committee approval. However, authors must comply with applicable institutional, legal, and program-specific requirements. Activities involving human-participant research, sensitive information, clinical procedures, vulnerable populations, or other higher-risk circumstances may require formal approval or an authorized exemption determination.

11. Can I publish photographs of participants in the manuscript?

Yes, when appropriate permission and publication consent have been obtained for identifiable persons. Greater safeguards are necessary for children, vulnerable participants, and sensitive contexts. Authors should avoid disclosing unnecessary personal information and must not present manipulated, unrelated, or AI-generated images as genuine documentation of community activities.

12. Is a pre-test and post-test required for every community engagement manuscript?

No. Evaluation methods must match program objectives. Depending on the activity, appropriate evidence may include pre- and post-intervention measurements, structured observations, interviews, qualitative feedback, skills demonstrations, implementation indicators, or other credible assessment methods. Authors must explain their evaluation procedures and limitations.

13. May authors use ChatGPT or other generative AI tools when preparing a manuscript?

Permitted AI assistance, such as language editing or translation, may be used under responsible human oversight. Authors must verify all content and references, must not fabricate participants or program results, and must include an accurate AI-use declaration in accordance with the journal's policy. AI tools cannot be listed as authors.

04 | Editorial Screening, Peer Review, and Revision

14. How does JPPMI review submitted manuscripts?

Manuscripts undergo initial editorial screening. Eligible manuscripts then enter double-anonymous peer review involving at least two independent reviewers. Editors evaluate reviewer recommendations and author responses before issuing a decision. Manuscripts that do not meet minimum requirements may be declined before external review.

15. How long does peer review take?

JPPMI targets approximately three to four weeks for the initial review round after suitable reviewers accept their invitations. This is an indicative target, not a guaranteed publication or acceptance period. Timing depends on reviewer availability, manuscript complexity, revision requirements, and editorial assessment.

16. Why might a community engagement manuscript be rejected?

Common reasons include a topic outside the journal's scope, activities lacking meaningful evaluation, insufficient description of the intervention, unsupported outcome claims, poor scholarly discussion, unresolved inconsistencies, or serious publication ethics concerns. Correctable technical problems may instead be returned for revision or completion.

17. What should I submit when the editor requests revisions?

Submit the revised manuscript with additions and modifications marked in red, together with a separate point-by-point response to all editor and reviewer comments. Each response should identify the revision made and its location. Upload the files through the manuscript's review stage in OJS before the stated deadline.

18. Can I appeal a rejection decision?

Authors may submit a reasoned appeal when they believe a decision involved a material procedural error, factual misunderstanding, or relevant evidence that was not adequately considered. Appeals are handled under the journal's Complaints and Appeals procedure. An appeal does not guarantee a change in the editorial decision.

05 | Publication Fees, Acceptance, and Author Rights

19. How much does publication in JPPMI cost, and when must I pay?

The standard Article Processing Charge (APC) is IDR 1,500,000 per accepted article. There is no submission fee and no peer-review fee. Payment is requested only after a formal editorial acceptance decision and through authorized journal payment instructions.

20. Are APC waivers or reductions available?

Authors experiencing financial constraints may inquire about possible fee assistance through the official editorial or administrative channel. A reduction or waiver is not automatic, and no fixed discount or eligibility entitlement is established. Any approved arrangement must be authorized and confirmed in writing.

21. Does a Letter of Acceptance guarantee immediate publication?

No. A valid Letter of Acceptance (LoA) confirms an editorial acceptance decision, not that the article has already been published. Accepted manuscripts remain subject to applicable production, metadata, proofreading, and quality-control procedures. Any planned issue assignment is subject to the journal's publication schedule.

22. Can I withdraw my manuscript, and will the APC be refunded?

A corresponding author may request withdrawal with the agreement of all co-authors. Withdrawal must be verified and confirmed in writing by the editorial office. Under the current Refund Policy, an APC already paid following formal acceptance is generally non-refundable for author-initiated withdrawal, subject to applicable legal obligations and separate handling of administrative payment errors.

06 | OJS Account, Verification, and Contact Support

23. What should I do if I cannot log in to my JPPMI OJS account?

Confirm your username and password, use the password-recovery function if necessary, and try opening the website using a current browser. JPPMI provides a dedicated troubleshooting guide, including Microsoft Edge cache-clearing instructions.
